How Australian Businesses Use PayTo Through Hykmah
Real scenarios from Australian businesses using PayTo for payments within Hykmah.
Recuron + PayTo Replacing Direct Debit Subscription billing with instant mandate-based collection
Challenge: A subscription business using BECS direct debit faces 3-day settlement delays, return rates for invalid bank accounts, and no real-time payment confirmation. Card fees are too high at scale.
Solution: Recuron creates PayTo mandates for each subscriber. Customers authorise via their banking app. Subsequent billing cycles collect instantly via the mandate with real-time confirmation — no 3-day BECS wait.
Orderlink Invoice Payment via PayTo B2B invoice payment with instant settlement
Challenge: B2B customers paying Orderlink invoices via EFT require manual remittance matching. Card payments incur high merchant fees on large invoice amounts. BECS direct debit has 3-day settlement.
Solution: Orderlink invoices include a PayTo payment link. B2B customers authorise payment from their business banking app. The payment transfers instantly. Hykmah marks the invoice paid within seconds.
PayTo at E-Commerce Checkout Bank-pay option at checkout with lower transaction fees
Challenge: An online retailer wants to offer a bank-pay option at checkout with lower transaction fees than card payments, particularly for higher-value orders where card processing costs are significant.
Solution: PayTo offered as a payment option at the Sellwise checkout alongside cards. Customers with PayTo-enabled banking apps authorise payment directly from their bank account. Settlement is instant.
Australia's New Payment Rail, Natively Integrated
PayTo is built on the NPP — Australia's real-time payments infrastructure. It replaces BECS direct debit with instant settlement, app-based authorisation, and lower fees than card processing.
Instant Settlement — No Batch Lag
PayTo payments settle in real time via the NPP. No 3-day BECS clearing, no next-day card settlement. Funds transfer instantly — order fulfilment can begin immediately on payment confirmation without clearance risk.
Mandate-Based Recurring Billing
PayTo mandates replace BECS direct debit for Recuron subscription billing. Customers authorise mandates in their banking app — a familiar, trusted flow. Mandate amendment and cancellation managed from the Hykmah customer record without contacting the customer.
Lower Fees Than Card Payments
PayTo bank-to-bank transfer fees are typically lower than card interchange fees, particularly for recurring billing and high-value transactions. Businesses processing significant volumes via card may see material cost reductions by migrating recurring billing to PayTo.
Customer Authorisation via Banking App
Customers authorise PayTo mandates and payments from their own banking app — no paper DDR forms, no card details entered on merchant sites. Customers can view and manage all their PayTo mandates from within their banking app at any time.
PayTo integration is included in all Hykmah plans — no per-transaction integration fee. Payment provider transaction fees apply per payment processed.

How the Integration Works
Mandate Created in Hykmah
For recurring billing, Hykmah creates a PayTo mandate defining the billing terms (amount, frequency, start date). The customer receives a notification in their banking app to approve the mandate — typically a 30-second process.
Customer Authorises in Banking App
The customer opens their banking app and reviews the mandate details. On authorisation, Hykmah receives real-time confirmation. The mandate is now active and can be used for recurring or one-off payments.
Payments Collected Instantly
When a payment is due (subscription billing cycle, invoice due date, or checkout), Hykmah initiates the PayTo payment against the active mandate. Funds transfer instantly. Hykmah marks the order or subscription as paid in real time.

Connect PayTo to Hykmah in 4 Steps
Confirm PayTo-Enabled Provider
PayTo requires a payment provider that supports NPP PayTo. Confirm with your provider (Stripe, eWAY, or your bank's merchant services) that PayTo is enabled on your merchant account. Contact your provider if not yet enabled.
Connect in Hykmah
Go to Settings → Integrations → Payments → PayTo. Select your PayTo provider and enter the required credentials. Hykmah verifies the PayTo connection and confirms mandate creation capability.
Configure Mandate Templates
- Create mandate templates per billing type (recurring subscription, one-off invoice, open-ended B2B)
- Configure customer notification content for mandate authorisation requests
- Set mandate expiry and amendment rules
Test and Activate
Create a test mandate in sandbox mode and simulate customer authorisation. Process a test PayTo payment and verify instant confirmation in Hykmah. Activate for live use and issue your first real PayTo mandate to a customer.

Frequently Asked Questions
PayTo is Australia's new NPP-based payment initiation service. Unlike BECS direct debit which takes 3 business days to settle, PayTo payments settle in real time. PayTo mandates are authorised by customers in their banking app, and customers can view and manage all their PayTo mandates from within their bank. PayTo offers instant settlement, higher security, and a better customer experience than traditional direct debit.
All major Australian banks (Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac, NAB) and many smaller banks and credit unions support PayTo. Customer adoption requires the customer's bank to support PayTo — check current bank support at the NPP Australia website. Coverage is expanding progressively.
Yes. PayTo is designed as a modern replacement for BECS direct debit. Recuron can use PayTo mandates instead of — or alongside — direct debit for Australian subscribers. PayTo offers instant settlement confirmation versus 3-day BECS clearing.
If a customer cancels a PayTo mandate via their banking app, Hykmah receives an immediate cancellation notification. For Recuron subscriptions, this triggers the payment failure workflow — the customer is notified and prompted to establish a new payment method. The subscription is paused until a new payment method is confirmed.
Yes. PayTo bank-to-bank transfer fees are typically lower than card interchange fees, particularly for recurring billing and high-value transactions. The exact fee savings depend on your payment provider's pricing.
No. The PayTo integration is included in Hykmah Professional ($50/month AUD), Premium and Enterprise at no additional cost. Your payment provider's transaction fees apply separately.
Common Issues & Solutions
Customer not receiving mandate authorisation notification
Customer's bank does not yet support PayTo, or notifications not enabled in the customer's banking app.
Fix: Confirm the customer's bank supports PayTo. If not yet supported, use an alternative payment method (card or BECS direct debit) until their bank's PayTo rollout is complete. Ask the customer to check push notification settings in their banking app.
Payment declined despite active mandate
Insufficient funds in customer account, mandate amount limit exceeded, or mandate suspended by customer's bank.
Fix: Check the PayTo payment failure reason code in Hykmah's payment log. Recuron's dunning workflow triggers automatically for mandate payment failures. Contact the customer to resolve insufficient funds or mandate issues.
Mandate creation failing
PayTo not enabled on merchant account, API credentials expired, or mandate parameters outside provider limits.
Fix: Verify your merchant account has PayTo enabled by your payment provider. Confirm PayTo API credentials are current in Hykmah. Check mandate parameters — some providers have minimum and maximum amount restrictions on PayTo mandates.
Settlement not appearing as instant
Some payment providers batch NPP settlements even though the NPP rail itself is instant.
Fix: Contact your payment provider to confirm they are passing through real-time NPP settlement to your account. If batching is occurring at the provider level, settlement timing is provider-dependent, not an NPP limitation.
